This kamado BBQ starter pack gives you everything to get started right away: a bag of Acacia Black Wattle charcoal and a pack of firelighter cubes. The charcoal lights easily, responds quickly when you adjust your air vents, and gives a long, even heat with a subtly smoky flavour. Exactly what you need while you're still getting the hang of firing up a kamado.

Who this kamado BBQ starter pack is for

If you've just got a kamado, you don't want to go hunting for the right charcoal and firelighters before you can even start. This pack solves that: fuel and firelighting material arrive in one go. The Acacia Black Wattle was chosen because it burns predictably. If your temperature reacts slower or faster than expected, you know it's down to your vent setting and not to inconsistent coals.

  • Charcoal that lights quickly and burns for a long time
  • Responds smoothly to your bottom vent and top controller
  • A subtly smoky flavour that never overpowers your food
  • Firelighter cubes made from natural materials, so no lighter fluid needed
  • Not tied to one size: works on any kamado that runs on charcoal

How to light it

Fill the firebox to just below the rim, tuck two or three firelighter cubes among the coals and let the whole thing burn through properly with the lid open first. Then close the lid and only start steering on temperature once you have a small, stable glowing core. Close it down too early and your fire goes out, or the temperature keeps climbing later on.

What else you need

For low temperatures and indirect cooking you'll also need a ceramic plate to keep the heat away from your food. Beyond that, a thermometer in your meat is the fastest way to learn what your kamado does at each vent setting.

Bill's tipSave the unburnt coals after a cook. They're dry, light faster next time and save you half a bag over a season.

Want to kit out your kamado further right away? Take a look at the kamado accessories, such as the heat deflector for the 23 inch for indirect cooking. Run out of charcoal? You'll find loose stock at bbq charcoal.
