HORL® Diamond Sharpening Stone - Coarse

The HORL coarse diamond sharpening stone is the heaviest step in the sharpening process. Diamond is harder than any knife steel and so removes material quickly, even on highly hardened Japanese steel where a regular stone just slides off. You reach for this disc when a knife is genuinely blunt, or when there's a nick or worn-down spot in the edge that fine sharpening will never remove.

When to use the HORL coarse diamond sharpening stone

Not every week. Coarse sharpening costs steel, and steel that's gone doesn't come back. Use it when a knife won't get sharp after fine sharpening, when the edge is visibly damaged, or when you want to make a neglected knife from the drawer usable again. For regular maintenance in between, switch to the finer grits afterwards.

The sequence that works

Start coarse, move finer and finish with polishing. Each step removes the scratches from the previous one, so skipping steps leaves an edge that looks sharp but folds over quickly. Work both sides of the knife equally and keep the same angle throughout, which is exactly what the HORL system's fixed guide is designed for.

Caring for the disc

Work dry and wipe away the sharpening dust after use with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Don't leave the disc sitting in water and store it where nothing metal rubs against it. Diamond wears slowly, but a damaged surface sharpens unevenly.
